Day 2 & 8 Tests

The tests you need when returning from travel

Green, Amber & Red Testing and Quarantine Explained

This page provides you with information on what you need to know about testing after travelling to a green, amber or red country. Find which list the country you are returning from is on and always refer to government advice here. Reach out to our expert customer support here if you need help.

Information on the this page relates to regulations from 26 July 2021 in Northern Ireland.

Returning from a country on the green list

If arriving into the UK from a country on the green list you must book a day 2 test. This will be taken on your return and a passenger locator form must be completed.

You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive.

You must quarantine if NHS Test & Trace informs you that you travelled to England with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Returning from a country on the amber list

If arriving into the UK from an amber list country you must quarantine for 10 days if you are not double vaccinated.

Mandatory tests are required on day 2 and 8  to be taken after your arrival in the UK.

You must complete a passenger locator form.

If you are double vaccinated you do not need to quarantine, but are still required to do a test on day 2.

Testing Requirements For Travel

* Information accurate as of 19 July 2021. Changes come into effect on 26 July in Northern Ireland.

Returning from or travelled through a country on the red list

If you have also been in or through a country or territory on the red list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, you must follow the red list rules.

You will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish National, or you have residence rights in the UK.

You will have to take a COVID-19 test before arriving in the UK, quarantine for 10 days and take tests on day 2 and 8.

Where do I quarantine?

You must quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days.

Are children required to get tested?

Children aged 4 and under do not need to take the day 2 or day 8 test.

What if I test positive?

If the test is positive you need to quarantine for another 10 days. Count the 10 days starting from the day after you took the test, or from when you first had symptoms if that is earlier.

People you live with in Northern Ireland, or people you are staying with, should also quarantine for 10 days from the date of your positive test.

You do not need to take the coronavirus test on or after day 8.

Can I end quarantine early with the Test to Release scheme?

Under the Test to Release scheme you can choose to pay for a private COVID-19 test on day 5 if based in England. If the result is negative (and the result of your day 2 test result was negative or inconclusive) you can end your quarantine. Click here for more information.
