How soon after sex should I get tested?

Testing windows vary by infection and test method. Testing too early can miss an infection, but you should not delay seeking advice if you have symptoms, a partner has tested positive, or the exposure was recent and you may need urgent prevention such as HIV PEP.

What sample will I need to provide?

It may be urine, a swab, a blood sample or a combination. The right samples depend on the infections being tested for, your symptoms and the sites of sexual contact.

What happens if a result is positive?

The team will explain the result and the appropriate next step. Depending on the infection, this may include treatment, a prescription, further testing, advice about partners or referral to a specialist sexual health service.

Your information is handled confidentially and would not normally be shared with your GP without your permission. As with any healthcare service, there can be limited exceptions where disclosure is required by law or necessary to protect you or someone else from serious harm.

Commonly investigated

Depending on the screen agreed, testing may include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, trichomonas, mycoplasma or other infections relevant to your history.

Urine sample

Often used when testing for infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, depending on anatomy and exposure.

Swab sample

The sample site matters. A clinician may advise a vaginal, throat, rectal or lesion swab where appropriate.

Blood sample

Used for infections such as HIV, syphilis and hepatitis when these are included in the agreed screen.
