Can a blood test show coeliac disease?

The tTG IgA blood test can suggest coeliac disease, but it cannot confirm it. A specialist confirms the diagnosis with further tests, and you need to keep eating gluten until testing is complete.

Does the H. pylori antibody in this panel show a current infection?

No. An antibody blood test shows whether you have been exposed to H. pylori, but it cannot tell whether the infection is still active. NICE recommends a breath or stool test to check for current infection.

What does a nutritional blood test check?

Is the Nutritional & Digestive Health Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

You have digestive symptoms, such as diarrhoea, stomach ache, bloating or indigestion, and want blood markers for coeliac disease and H. pylori alongside a nutrition check.
You have low iron, vitamin B12 or folate without a clear cause. NICE guidance says coeliac disease should be considered in this situation.
You want a broad check of your nutrition, including iron, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, zinc and magnesium.
You want to check your blood sugar and cholesterol at the same appointment.

What it can show

Tissue transglutaminase IgA (tTG IgA) is the main first blood test for coeliac disease. A raised level suggests coeliac disease, which a specialist then confirms with further tests.
The H. pylori antibody test shows whether you have been exposed to H. pylori, a bacterium that is a main cause of stomach ulcers. It cannot tell whether the infection is current or was in the past.
The full blood count, iron studies (ferritin, iron, transferrin, TIBC and transferrin saturation), vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, calcium and albumin show your nutritional status and whether you have anaemia.
Glucose, insulin and HbA1c show how your body is handling sugar, with HbA1c reflecting your average over the last 2 to 3 months. Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and the cholesterol to HDL ratio show your blood fats.

What it can’t tell you

The coeliac test is only reliable if you have been eating gluten in more than one meal a day for at least 6 weeks. This panel does not measure total IgA, and low IgA (more common in people with coeliac disease) can give a falsely negative result.
A positive H. pylori antibody result can stay positive after an infection has gone. NICE recommends a breath or stool test to check for current infection, which your GP can arrange.
Total antioxidant status is not used in NHS or NICE guidance and has no agreed UK target range, so treat it as background information only.
Normal results do not rule out a digestive condition. If you have ongoing digestive symptoms, see your GP even if these results are normal.
Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment are made with your GP or specialist, and you should not start a gluten-free diet until coeliac disease has been confirmed.
