About this test

Is the Endocrinology Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You have symptoms that could come from your thyroid or your reproductive hormones, such as tiredness, weight change, irregular periods or low sex drive, and want both checked together.
  • You have irregular periods or symptoms that can be linked to PCOS, and want your hormones and thyroid checked at the same time.
  • Thyroid disease runs in your family and you also want a picture of your reproductive hormones.
  • You want a broader hormone review, including your ovarian reserve (AMH), adrenal hormones and blood sugar, which Endocrinology Plus adds.

What it can show

  • TSH, free T4 and free T3 show how well your thyroid is working. Thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin) can show whether the immune system is affecting it.
  • FSH, LH, oestradiol and progesterone show how the pituitary gland and the ovaries or testes are working. Prolactin can point to a pituitary cause of irregular periods or low sex drive.
  • Testosterone, SHBG and the free androgen index estimate active male hormones. In women raised levels can be a feature of PCOS, and in men low levels can suggest low testosterone.
  • Endocrinology Plus adds AMH (a marker of the egg reserve in the ovaries), cortisol and DHEAs (hormones from the adrenal glands), and insulin and HbA1c. HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the last 2 to 3 months.

What it can’t tell you

  • Illness, pregnancy, hormonal contraception, HRT and other medicines can change thyroid and reproductive hormone results.
  • Female hormones change through the menstrual cycle, so results are interpreted against the day of your cycle the sample was taken.
  • Cortisol follows a daily pattern and rises with stress and illness, so a single result may need repeating.
  • AMH does not predict your chance of getting pregnant naturally. It is mainly used when planning fertility treatment.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment of hormone and thyroid conditions are with your GP or specialist.
