About this test

Is the Fertility Panel Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You are planning a pregnancy and want a broad check of your hormones and general health beforehand.
  • You have been trying for a baby and want to look at the hormones that affect ovulation and sperm production while you arrange to see your GP or a fertility clinic.
  • You have irregular periods and want reproductive hormones, thyroid function and blood sugar checked together.
  • You want to know your AMH level before talking to a fertility clinic about treatment such as IVF.
  • You want a chlamydia and gonorrhoea check, as these infections often cause no symptoms and can affect fertility if untreated.

What it can show

  • Reproductive hormones (FSH, LH, oestradiol, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone, SHBG, the free androgen index and DHEAs) show how the ovaries or testes are being signalled and whether you may have ovulated. In women, raised male hormones can point towards PCOS.
  • Thyroid tests (TSH, free T4, free T3 and thyroid antibodies) check for an underactive or overactive thyroid, which can affect ovulation and periods.
  • General health markers cover your blood count, iron stores, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, liver markers, urea and electrolytes, cholesterol, inflammation (CRP), cortisol and blood sugar (glucose, insulin and HbA1c). They do not test fertility directly, but can highlight health issues worth addressing before pregnancy.
  • The AMH option adds anti-Müllerian hormone, which reflects your ovarian reserve. NICE says AMH helps predict how the ovaries may respond to IVF, but it should not be used to predict your chance of getting pregnant naturally.
  • The CT/NG option adds a test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Untreated, these infections can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to infertility.

What it can’t tell you

  • This panel does not include a semen analysis. For men, NICE and the NHS say semen analysis is the main fertility test, with hormone blood tests considered if semen results are abnormal.
  • Blood tests cannot check whether your fallopian tubes are open or look at your womb. These need scans or other tests arranged by a fertility specialist.
  • Female hormones change through the cycle, so one sample cannot be perfectly timed for every hormone. Progesterone only shows whether you ovulated if it is taken about 7 days before your next period.
  • Normal results do not mean you will conceive. The NHS advises seeing your GP if you have not conceived after a year of trying, or sooner if you are 36 or over or have a known concern, and both partners should be assessed.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and history. Diagnosis and treatment of fertility problems are with your GP or a fertility specialist.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

Blood tests look at the hormones that control ovulation, such as FSH, LH, oestradiol and progesterone, and a progesterone level taken about a week before your period can show whether you have ovulated. A fertility specialist may also use scans and other tests to check the womb and fallopian tubes.
