About this test

Is the Vitamin D Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You have symptoms that can be linked to low vitamin D, such as bone pain, muscle aches or muscle weakness.
  • You are more likely to have low vitamin D, for example because you rarely go outdoors, cover most of your skin when outside, have darker skin or are aged 65 or over.
  • You have a condition that affects how you absorb food, such as coeliac disease or Crohn’s disease, or you have had weight loss surgery.
  • You take vitamin D supplements and want to check your level.

What it can show

  • The test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the main form of vitamin D in your blood and the standard measure of your vitamin D status.
  • UK guidance on bone health uses these levels: below 25 nmol/L means a higher risk of deficiency, 25 to 50 nmol/L may be too low for some people, and above 50 nmol/L is enough for most people.
  • Vitamin D helps your body control calcium and phosphate, which keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy.

What it can’t tell you

  • NICE guidance does not recommend routine vitamin D testing for people without symptoms. If you are at higher risk, the usual advice is to take a daily supplement whether or not you are tested.
  • In the UK your skin only makes vitamin D from sunlight between about late March and the end of September, so your level can depend on the time of year you are tested.
  • Vitamin D supplements raise your result, so tell us what you take and the dose.
  • Aches, pains and tiredness have many causes, and a low vitamin D level may not explain all of your symptoms. Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms, and diagnosis and treatment are made with your GP or specialist.
