About this test

Is the Kidney Health Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You have a condition that can affect the kidneys, such as high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease, and want your kidney function checked.
  • You take a long-term medicine that can affect the kidneys, such as lithium, omeprazole or an anti-inflammatory painkiller like ibuprofen.
  • Kidney disease runs in your family, or you have had kidney stones or an enlarged prostate.
  • You want to recheck a previous borderline kidney result.

What it can show

  • Creatinine is a waste product from your muscles that healthy kidneys filter out. Your creatinine result, age and sex are used to calculate your eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate), the main measure of how well your kidneys are filtering.
  • Urea is another waste product cleared by the kidneys. It can help show whether you are short of fluid, but creatinine and eGFR are the better guide to kidney function.
  • Sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphate and magnesium are minerals that your kidneys help keep in balance. Their levels can change when the kidneys are not working well.
  • Albumin is the main protein in your blood. It is used to work out your adjusted calcium, because some calcium in the blood is carried by albumin.

What it can’t tell you

  • This is a blood test only. It does not include the urine albumin:creatinine ratio (ACR), which is usually checked alongside eGFR to give a fuller picture of kidney health.
  • One result is a snapshot. NICE advises that a first eGFR below 60 is repeated within 2 weeks, and chronic kidney disease is only diagnosed when changes last for more than 3 months.
  • eGFR is less reliable if you have a lot of muscle or very little, take protein supplements, are pregnant or have had an amputation. eGFR results above 60 are also less precise.
  • A normal result does not rule out every kidney problem. Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and history, and diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease are with your GP or specialist.
