About this test

Is the Standard Screen Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You want a broad check of your general health, including liver, kidneys, cholesterol, blood sugar, iron stores and vitamin D.
  • You feel tired or run down and want to check common causes such as anaemia, low iron stores or low vitamin D, or, with Plus, a thyroid problem.
  • You want a yearly check so you can compare your results over time.
  • You have symptoms that may be hormonal, such as irregular periods, menopause symptoms, low sex drive or low energy, and want hormones checked alongside your general health (Hormonal Health option).

What it can show

  • The Standard Screen checks your liver, kidneys (including a urine test), salts and minerals such as adjusted calcium, and a full blood count for anaemia and other blood changes.
  • It looks at heart and diabetes risk with a cholesterol profile, fasting glucose and HbA1c, which reflects your average blood sugar over the last 2 to 3 months. CRP and hsCRP measure inflammation.
  • Ferritin shows your iron stores, and vitamin D shows whether your level is low, which is more likely between October and early March when sunlight is too weak for your skin to make enough.
  • Standard Screen Plus adds thyroid tests (TSH, free T4, free T3 and thyroid antibodies) and either PSA for men or CA 125 for women. The Folic Acid & Vitamin B12 option builds on Plus and adds folate and vitamin B12, which your body needs to make healthy red blood cells.
  • The Hormonal Health option builds on Plus and adds FSH, LH, oestradiol, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone, SHBG and the free androgen index. These can help show how the ovaries or testes and the pituitary gland are working.

What it can’t tell you

  • PSA and CA 125 are not screening tests for cancer on their own. Raised levels have many non-cancer causes, such as a urine infection or a non-cancerous prostate problem for PSA, or endometriosis, fibroids or pregnancy for CA 125, and a normal result does not rule cancer out.
  • PSA testing is an informed choice. It can help pick up prostate cancer early, but it can also miss cancer or lead to tests and treatment you may not need, which is why routine PSA screening is not offered in the UK or Ireland for most men.
  • Some hormone results depend on the time of day and, for women, the stage of the menstrual cycle and any hormonal contraception or HRT, so a single sample can be hard to interpret.
  • One result is a snapshot, and borderline results may need repeating before any decision is made.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history. Diagnosis and treatment of any condition are made with your GP or specialist.
