About this test

Is the Basic Screen Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You want a simple baseline check of your general health without needing a GP referral.
  • You want to know your cholesterol and blood sugar levels, which help show your risk of heart disease and diabetes.
  • You drink alcohol regularly or take long-term medicines and want to check how your liver and kidneys are working.
  • You want a starting point before deciding whether you need a more detailed screen.

What it can show

  • Liver tests (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin and albumin) can show signs of liver inflammation or damage, or a problem with the bile ducts. Some of these also come from bone or muscle, so they are read together.
  • Kidney tests (creatinine, eGFR and urea) show how well your kidneys are filtering waste. Sodium, potassium, chloride and phosphate show whether salts and minerals that your kidneys help to balance are in the normal range.
  • A full blood count checks your red cells, white cells and platelets. It can show anaemia and other changes in your blood that may need a closer look.
  • A cholesterol profile (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and the total/HDL ratio) and fasting glucose help show your risk of heart disease and whether your blood sugar is raised.
  • CRP and high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) measure inflammation. They can rise with infection, injury or an inflammatory condition, but they do not show the cause on their own.

What it can’t tell you

  • This is an entry-level screen. It does not include HbA1c, thyroid tests, iron stores or vitamin levels, which are part of our more detailed screens.
  • One result is a snapshot. Recent illness, alcohol, hard exercise and some medicines can change liver, kidney and inflammation results, so a borderline result may need repeating.
  • Normal liver blood tests do not always mean your liver is healthy. Many people with fatty liver disease have normal routine liver tests.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history. Diagnosis and treatment of any condition are made with your GP or specialist.
