About this test

Is the Lifestyle Screen Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You want a general check of your liver, kidneys, cholesterol and blood sugar, for example while making changes to your diet, drinking or activity.
  • You feel tired or run down and want to check common causes such as anaemia, low iron, low vitamin B12, folate or vitamin D.
  • You follow a diet that is low in animal-source foods, such as a vegan diet, which is a common risk factor for low vitamin B12.
  • You want to check whether your iron levels are too low or too high, for example if a close relative has haemochromatosis.

What it can show

  • Liver tests (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin and albumin) can show signs of liver inflammation, damage or a bile duct problem.
  • Kidney tests (creatinine, eGFR and urea), salts (sodium, potassium and chloride), adjusted calcium and phosphate show how well your kidneys are working and whether key minerals are in balance.
  • A cholesterol profile, fasting glucose and HbA1c help show your risk of heart disease and diabetes. HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the last 2 to 3 months.
  • A full blood count with iron, ferritin, transferrin, TIBC and transferrin saturation can show anaemia and whether your iron levels are low or high, as can happen in haemochromatosis.
  • Vitamin B12 and folate are needed to make healthy red blood cells, and low levels can cause anaemia. Vitamin D is more likely to be low between October and early March, when sunlight is too weak for your skin to make enough.

What it can’t tell you

  • This screen does not include thyroid tests, an inflammation marker (CRP) or a urine test. If you want these, the Standard Screen or Advanced Screen may suit you better.
  • Normal liver blood tests do not always mean your liver is healthy, as many people with fatty liver disease have normal routine liver tests.
  • Vitamin B12 supplements can raise your B12 result without fully treating a deficiency, and the combined contraceptive pill can lower it. Some people have symptoms of deficiency with normal levels.
  • One result is a snapshot. Recent illness, alcohol and some medicines can change results, so a borderline result may need repeating.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history. Diagnosis and treatment of any condition are made with your GP or specialist.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

Not directly through the full blood count. A full blood count can show anaemia and red blood cells that are larger than normal, which can be a sign of low vitamin B12 or folate, but it does not measure vitamin levels. This screen measures vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D separately.
