About this test

Is the Acute Medicine Panel Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You want a core set of routine blood tests covering your liver, kidneys, salts and minerals, blood count, blood sugar and cholesterol.
  • You take a long-term medicine, such as a statin, that your prescriber monitors with blood tests like liver function, cholesterol and HbA1c.
  • You have symptoms such as tiredness, muscle aches or joint pain and also want inflammation, iron, muscle (creatine kinase) and uric acid checked (Panel 2).

What it can show

  • Panel 1 covers liver tests (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin and albumin) and kidney tests (creatinine, eGFR and urea), with sodium, potassium, chloride, adjusted calcium and phosphate. These can show signs of liver or kidney problems and whether key salts and minerals are in balance.
  • A full blood count checks your red cells, white cells and platelets and can show anaemia. Fasting glucose, HbA1c and a cholesterol profile help show your risk of diabetes and heart disease.
  • Panel 2 adds CRP, which rises with infection or inflammation, and creatine kinase, a muscle enzyme that can rise with muscle injury, after hard exercise or with an underactive thyroid.
  • Panel 2 also adds iron, ferritin and other iron studies to check your iron levels, uric acid, which can be raised in gout, and a urine test.

What it can’t tell you

  • These panels are planned blood tests, not an emergency service. If you have chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke or feel seriously unwell, call 999 or go to an emergency department.
  • One result is a snapshot. Recent illness, alcohol and some medicines can change results, so a borderline result may need repeating.
  • Creatine kinase can rise after hard exercise, an injection, a fall or an injury, and uric acid can be lower during a gout flare, so these results may need repeating at a better time.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history. Diagnosis and treatment of any condition are made with your GP or specialist.
