About this test

Is the Prostate Profile Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You are thinking about a PSA test and have weighed up the possible benefits and downsides, as the NHS advises.
  • You have a higher risk of prostate cancer, for example because you are Black or have a family history of prostate cancer.
  • You want to repeat a previous PSA result to see whether it has changed.
  • You have symptoms such as difficulty starting to pee or a weak flow. You should also see your GP, who can examine you and arrange further tests.

What it can show

  • PSA (prostate specific antigen) is a protein made by the prostate. A raised level can be caused by prostate cancer, but also by non-cancer conditions such as an enlarged prostate or a urine infection.
  • MCP-1 (monocyte chemotactic protein-1) is a protein involved in inflammation. The laboratory uses it with your PSA result to calculate a combined prostate risk score.
  • MCP-1 and the risk score are not part of standard PSA testing, there is no NHS or NICE guidance on using them, and the score has not been validated as a screening test for prostate cancer. The doctor reviewing your results will read them mainly alongside your PSA.

What it can’t tell you

  • PSA is not a screening test for prostate cancer on its own, and routine PSA screening is not currently offered in the UK or Ireland.
  • Many men with a raised PSA do not have prostate cancer, and a raised result can lead to further tests, such as an MRI scan or biopsy, that may turn out to be unnecessary.
  • A normal PSA does not rule out prostate cancer. One large study found that around 1 in 7 men with a normal PSA may have prostate cancer.
  • Testing can find slow-growing cancers that might never have caused harm, which can lead to treatment and side effects you may not have needed.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and history. A raised result is usually repeated, and further tests, diagnosis and treatment are with your GP or specialist.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

Not on its own. PSA can be raised for reasons other than cancer, and a normal result does not rule cancer out, so it is one piece of information used alongside your symptoms and an examination.
