About this test

Is the Stress Hormones Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • Your doctor has suggested checking your cortisol level, for example because of symptoms that could be linked to your adrenal glands.
  • You have symptoms such as extreme tiredness, dizziness when standing up or unexplained weight loss, which can sometimes be linked to low cortisol.
  • You have symptoms such as extra fat on your tummy and upper back, a red round face, easy bruising or stretch marks, which can be linked to high cortisol.
  • You have signs of excess male hormones, such as excess hair growth, and want to check DHEAs, a hormone made by the adrenal glands.

What it can show

  • Cortisol is a hormone made by the adrenal glands. It is highest in the early morning and lowest in the evening, and a morning result can help show whether levels are unusually high or low.
  • DHEAs (dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate) is a weak male hormone made mainly by the adrenal glands in both men and women. It can help look at causes of excess male hormones and at how the adrenal glands are working.
  • DHEAs levels peak in early adulthood and slowly fall with age, so your age is taken into account when your result is interpreted.

What it can’t tell you

  • This test measures hormones, not stress itself. Stress and illness can raise cortisol, so a high result may need repeating when you are well and less stressed.
  • A single cortisol blood test cannot confirm Cushing’s syndrome or Addison’s disease. If results are abnormal, a specialist may arrange further blood, urine or saliva tests, or a stimulation test.
  • Pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and steroid medicines such as prednisolone and hydrocortisone can change cortisol results.
  • DHEA supplements raise DHEAs levels, so tell us if you take them.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment of adrenal conditions are with your GP or specialist.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

Not directly. Cortisol rises with stress, but it also rises with illness and changes through the day, so a cortisol result cannot tell you how stressed you are.
