About this test

Is the Inflammation Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You have symptoms that can come with inflammation, such as joint pain or stiffness, aching muscles or feeling generally unwell, and want your inflammation markers checked.
  • You have a long-term inflammatory condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease, and want to check how active it is.
  • You have been asked to repeat a raised CRP or ESR result after a few weeks.
  • You want a general check that includes your blood count and iron stores alongside inflammation markers.

What it can show

  • CRP (C-reactive protein) is made by the liver and rises within hours of infection, injury or inflammation. It falls quickly as inflammation settles, so it is also used to track how well treatment is working.
  • ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a tube. It rises with inflammation but changes more slowly than CRP, so doctors often look at the two together.
  • The full blood count checks red cells, white cells and platelets. It can show anaemia and changes in white cells that can go with infection or inflammation.
  • Ferritin shows your iron stores. It also rises with inflammation, so it is read alongside your CRP.
  • The ESR option measures ESR on its own, for example to recheck a previous result.

What it can’t tell you

  • These markers can show that inflammation may be present, but not where it is or what is causing it.
  • A normal result does not rule out an inflammatory condition. For example, no blood test can prove or rule out rheumatoid arthritis on its own.
  • ESR can be raised by age, anaemia, pregnancy and periods, and some medicines can raise or lower it.
  • If you have a new severe headache, pain or tenderness in your temples or scalp, jaw pain when eating, or any change in your vision, do not wait for a private test. Ask for an urgent GP appointment, or contact your GP out-of-hours service, the same day.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment are with your GP or specialist.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

Both are markers of inflammation. CRP rises and falls quickly, while ESR changes more slowly and is affected by more things, such as age and anaemia, so doctors often look at both together.
