About this test

Is the Metabolic Syndrome Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You carry extra weight around your waist or have high blood pressure, and want to understand your metabolic health.
  • Type 2 diabetes or heart disease runs in your family.
  • You have been told you may have insulin resistance, or you have a condition linked to it such as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, previously called PCOS).
  • You want blood sugar, insulin and detailed cholesterol markers checked in one test (Extended option).

What it can show

  • Adiponectin is a hormone made by fat tissue that helps the body respond to insulin. Studies have found lower levels in people with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance.
  • CRP and high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) measure inflammation. hsCRP picks up low-level inflammation, and CRP tends to be higher in people living with obesity.
  • The Extended option adds the blood tests the NHS uses to look at metabolic syndrome: fasting glucose and HbA1c for blood sugar, and a full cholesterol profile including triglycerides and HDL.
  • The Extended option also adds insulin and C-peptide, which show how much insulin your body is making, plus apolipoproteins, lipoprotein(a) and small LDL cholesterol for a more detailed look at heart risk.

What it can’t tell you

  • Metabolic syndrome is not assessed on blood tests alone. Your waist measurement, weight and blood pressure matter too, and the Standard option does not include blood sugar or cholesterol.
  • Adiponectin, insulin and the apolipoproteins are not part of routine UK assessment. They add detail, but they do not replace the standard measurements.
  • CRP rises with any infection or injury, so a raised result may have nothing to do with your metabolism. Test when you are well.
  • HbA1c can be misleading if you have anaemia, a haemoglobin variant such as sickle cell or thalassaemia, or are pregnant.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and measurements. Diagnosis and treatment are with your GP or specialist.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

The NHS describes it as a group of health problems that together put you at risk of type 2 diabetes and conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. It is linked to insulin resistance and possibly to carrying extra fat around the stomach.
