About this test

Is the Lipids & HbA1c Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You want to check your cholesterol and blood sugar together as part of a general health check.
  • You are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes, for example you are white and over 40, or over 25 and from a South Asian, Chinese, Black African or Black Caribbean background.
  • Diabetes, high cholesterol or heart disease runs in your family, or you have high blood pressure or are overweight.
  • You have been told your blood sugar is borderline (prediabetes) and want to recheck it.

What it can show

  • Total cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and the total cholesterol to HDL ratio make up a standard lipid profile. Doctors use these, with factors such as age and blood pressure, to estimate your risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. It is used to check for type 2 diabetes and to show whether you may be at high risk of it (prediabetes).
  • CRP and high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) measure inflammation. hsCRP picks up low levels that have been linked with heart disease risk.
  • The full blood count checks your red cells, white cells and platelets. It gives a broad picture of your general health and can show anaemia, which can also affect your HbA1c result.

What it can’t tell you

  • HbA1c can be misleading if you have anaemia, low iron, a haemoglobin variant such as sickle cell or thalassaemia, recent heavy bleeding or a recent blood transfusion. It is also not used to diagnose diabetes in pregnancy or type 1 diabetes.
  • One raised HbA1c is not a diagnosis. If you have no symptoms, diabetes is confirmed with a second blood test.
  • Cholesterol can be temporarily lower during or after an illness, and CRP rises with any infection or injury, so test when you are well.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and health history. Diagnosis and treatment of diabetes or high cholesterol are with your GP or specialist.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

No. HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months, so a recent meal does not affect it. The cholesterol part of this test does not need fasting either.
