About this test

Is the Premium Advanced Nutrition & Hormones Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You want a detailed look at your nutrition, including several measures of vitamin B12 and folate, iron, vitamin D, zinc, copper and magnesium.
  • You have symptoms that may be hormonal, such as low energy, low sex drive, irregular periods or menopause symptoms, and want hormones checked alongside your general health.
  • You want to understand your heart and metabolic health in depth, including insulin resistance and lipoprotein(a).
  • You follow a restricted diet, or have a condition that affects how you absorb nutrients, and want a wide nutritional check.

What it can show

  • Nutrition markers include total and active vitamin B12, folate and red cell folate, homocysteine, a full iron profile, vitamin D, zinc, copper and magnesium. NICE says either total or active B12 can be used as the first test for B12 deficiency.
  • Hormone markers include thyroid tests with antibodies, FSH, LH, oestradiol, prolactin, testosterone, SHBG and DHEA sulphate (an adrenal hormone), with progesterone for women and cortisol for men.
  • Heart and metabolic markers include a full cholesterol profile with apolipoproteins, small LDL and lipoprotein(a), plus glucose, HbA1c, insulin, C-peptide and HOMA-IR, an estimate of insulin resistance worked out from glucose and insulin.
  • Liver tests with a FIB-4 score, kidney tests with cystatin C and a urine albumin:creatinine ratio, pancreas enzymes, and PTH, adjusted calcium and phosphate cover organ and bone health.
  • Inflammation and immune markers (CRP, hsCRP, immunoglobulins, complement C4, rheumatoid factor and ASO) can show signs of inflammation or immune activity that may need a closer look.

What it can’t tell you

  • Vitamin B12 supplements can raise total and active B12 results without fully treating a deficiency, and the combined contraceptive pill can lower total B12. Some people have symptoms of deficiency with normal levels.
  • Hormone results vary with the time of day, the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraception or HRT, and stress. A single cortisol result has limited value and is best taken at about 9am.
  • Insulin and HOMA-IR are easiest to interpret on a fasting sample, so results after eating may be less reliable.
  • One result is a snapshot, and borderline results usually need repeating before any decision is made.
  • Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms. Decisions about diagnosis, supplements or hormone treatment are made with your GP, specialist or prescriber.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

Total B12 measures all the vitamin B12 in your blood, while active B12 measures a smaller part of it called holotranscobalamin. NICE says either can be used as the first test for suspected B12 deficiency, and this screen includes both.

Based on 21 sources, including NHS and NICE guidance
