What does this test include?

TSH, free T4, free T3 and two thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin). Together these show how well your thyroid is working and whether the immune system may be affecting it.

Can a thyroid blood test show Hashimoto’s?

Raised thyroid antibodies, particularly anti-TPO, suggest autoimmune thyroid disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. A doctor makes the diagnosis by looking at the antibody results together with your thyroid hormone levels and symptoms.

Does biotin affect thyroid test results?

Yes. Biotin can make thyroid results look higher or lower than they really are. Tell us if you take it, and if you take a high dose (5mg or more a day), stop it for a week before your test if it is safe to do so.

Is the Thyroid Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

You have symptoms that can be linked to an underactive thyroid, such as tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation or dry skin.
You have symptoms that can be linked to an overactive thyroid, such as weight loss, a racing heart, anxiety, a tremor or feeling hot.
Thyroid disease runs in your family, or you have another autoimmune condition such as type 1 diabetes or coeliac disease.
You want to recheck a previous borderline result.

What it can show

TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is the main screening test. A high level can point to an underactive thyroid and a low level to an overactive one.
Free T4 and free T3 are the thyroid hormones themselves. They help show how significant a change in TSH is.
Thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin) can show whether the immune system is affecting the thyroid, the most common cause of thyroid problems in the UK.

What it can’t tell you

One result is a snapshot. Borderline results are usually repeated after a few weeks before any decision is made.
Recent illness, pregnancy and some medicines can change thyroid results.
A normal result does not rule out other causes of symptoms such as tiredness, which can also come from low iron, vitamin B12 or vitamin D.
Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment of a thyroid condition are made with your GP or specialist.
