About this test

Is the Allergy Blood Test right for you?

Who it’s for

  • You have hay fever-type symptoms, such as sneezing, a blocked or runny nose or itchy eyes, and want to know which pollens, house dust mites, animals or moulds you react to.
  • You get symptoms such as itching, hives, lip swelling or stomach upset soon after eating certain foods and want to check for antibodies to those foods.
  • Your symptoms are worse indoors, on waking or around animals, and you want to check for house dust mite or pet sensitisation.
  • You want results to take to your GP or an allergy clinic to help guide the next steps.

What it can show

  • Each panel measures specific IgE antibodies, the type of antibody involved in immediate allergic reactions, to a set of allergens. Every panel also includes total IgE, which helps the doctor interpret the specific results.
  • The First-Line panel covers common triggers: cat, dog, house dust mite, silver birch and timothy grass pollen, egg white, milk and peanut. The Enhanced panel adds a second house dust mite, dog dander, mugwort (a weed pollen), egg yolk, cod, shrimp, hazelnut, sesame and soya.
  • The Food panel covers 31 foods, including milk and casein, egg, peanut, tree nuts, sesame, soya, wheat, fish, shellfish and a range of fruit and vegetables. The Pollen & Grass panel covers tree, grass and weed pollens, which tend to cause symptoms at different times of year.
  • The Pet & Animal panel covers cat, dog, horse, cow, rabbit, guinea pig and hamster. The Mould & Fungal panel covers Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium moulds, some of which are linked to damp indoor environments, plus baker’s yeast, brewer’s yeast and Candida.
  • The Complete panel combines all four focused panels with both house dust mites, testing 63 allergens in total. The focused panels do not include house dust mite.

What it can’t tell you

  • A positive result shows sensitisation, meaning your body has made IgE to that allergen. It does not always mean you are allergic: some people with positive tests have no symptoms, and the IgE level does not predict how severe a reaction would be.
  • Testing many allergens at once can produce positive results that are not clinically important, which can lead to avoiding foods unnecessarily. Some fruit, vegetable and nut results can also be positive because of cross-reactivity with pollen.
  • These tests only look at IgE-mediated (immediate) allergy. Delayed reactions are not IgE-mediated and are usually assessed with a supervised elimination diet instead.
  • A negative result does not completely rule out an allergy if your history strongly suggests one.
  • Results are interpreted alongside your symptoms and history. Diagnosis, food challenges and allergy treatment, such as adrenaline pens, are arranged with your GP or an allergy clinic.

Common questions

Questions about this test.

No. This is an IgE allergy blood test. Allergy UK says there is no blood test for diagnosing food intolerance, the NHS does not recommend intolerance tests you can buy, and NICE advises against IgG “food sensitivity” tests for diagnosing food allergy. Keeping a food and symptom diary and trying a supervised elimination diet are the recommended approach.
